How to Sleep Better: Healthy Sleep Habits That Really Work

A good night’s sleep does more than help you feel rested. Quality sleep supports your immune system, improves your mood, sharpens your focus, and gives your body the time it needs to recover. If you’ve been struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling refreshed, improving your sleep hygiene may be one of the best places to start.

Sleep hygiene simply refers to the healthy habits that promote consistent, restful sleep. While there’s no magic solution for better sleep, small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference over time.

Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

One of the most effective healthy sleep habits is going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep naturally and wake up feeling refreshed. According to the Mayo Clinic, most healthy adults should aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

What you consume throughout the day can affect how well you sleep at night. Try to avoid large meals close to bedtime, and limit caffeine and nicotine in the afternoon and evening since their effects can last for several hours. While alcohol may make you feel sleepy initially, it often disrupts sleep later in the night, leading to lower-quality rest.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Your bedroom should encourage sleep. Keeping it cool, dark, and quiet can help you fall asleep more easily. It’s also a good idea to put away phones, tablets, and televisions at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed. The blue light from screens can interfere with your body’s natural production of melatonin, making it harder to wind down.

Instead, consider reading a book, taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, or practicing deep breathing as part of your bedtime routine.

Healthy Daytime Habits Matter Too

Regular physical activity and spending time outdoors during the day can help improve your natural sleep-wake cycle. If you enjoy naps, keep them to about an hour or less and avoid napping late in the afternoon.

If stress or racing thoughts keep you awake, relaxation techniques such as meditation, gentle stretching, or journaling before bed may also help calm your mind and prepare your body for sleep.

When to Talk to Your Healthcare Provider

If you’ve consistently practiced healthy sleep habits and still struggle to get quality sleep, talk with your healthcare provider. Ongoing sleep problems, loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, or difficulty staying asleep could be signs of an underlying sleep disorder that deserves further evaluation.

It’s also worth remembering that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect sleep. If you’ve recently started a new medication and noticed changes in your sleep, your pharmacist can help review your medications and discuss possible solutions.
