Pharmacy Myths vs. Facts: Separating Truth from Fiction

There’s no shortage of health information online, on social media, and from friends and family, but not all of it is accurate. Some common pharmacy myths can lead to medications being used incorrectly, affecting both your treatment and your health. Knowing the facts can help you get the most benefit from your medications and avoid unnecessary risks. Your pharmacist is one of your best resources for separating fact from fiction and answering questions about your medications.

Myth: Antibiotics will help you recover from a cold or the flu.
Fact: Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections. Colds, influenza, and many sore throats are caused by viruses, so antibiotics will not help you get better. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can also contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future bacterial infections more difficult to treat.

Myth: You can stop taking an antibiotic as soon as you feel better.
Fact: While it may seem harmless, stopping treatment early can allow some bacteria to survive. Those remaining bacteria can continue to grow and may become harder to treat. It is important to take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and finish the full course unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.

Myth: Generic medications are lower quality than brand-name medications.
Fact: Generic medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must meet the same standards for quality, safety, strength, and effectiveness as their brand-name counterparts. The main difference is often the cost, making generic medications an excellent option that can help many patients save money without sacrificing quality.

Myth: It’s okay to share prescription medications with family or friends if they have similar symptoms.
Fact: Every prescription is chosen based on a person’s medical history, health conditions, allergies, and other medications they may be taking. A medication that is safe for one person may not be safe for someone else. Prescription medications should only be used by the person they were prescribed for.

Myth: Over-the-counter medications are completely harmless.
Fact: While over-the-counter medications are generally safe when used correctly, they can still cause side effects or interact with prescription medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements. That’s why it’s important to let your pharmacist know about everything you’re taking, including non-prescription products.

Myth: If you miss a dose, you should take two doses the next time.
Fact: In most cases, doubling up on a medication is not recommended unless your healthcare provider or pharmacist specifically instructs you to do so. Taking extra medication can increase the risk of side effects or even overdose. If you miss a dose and aren’t sure what to do, contact your pharmacist for guidance.
