Medicine Matters

Why Wearing Sunscreen Daily Matters

When people think about staying healthy, they often focus on eating well, exercising, or taking their medications. One simple habit that’s easy to overlook is wearing sunscreen every day. Protecting your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help reduce your risk of sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Many people only apply sunscreen when they’re headed to the pool or spending the day outdoors. The truth is that UV rays can reach your skin even on cloudy days, and they can pass through glass. That means your skin is still exposed while you’re driving, working near a window, or running errands.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum product with an SPF of at least 30. If you’ll be swimming or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. If you have sensitive skin or react to chemical sunscreens, consider a mineral (physical) sunscreen instead. Recent advances have improved these formulas, helping reduce the white cast that used to be a common concern.

Using enough sunscreen is just as important as choosing the right one. Most adults need about one ounce to adequately cover exposed skin. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas, and don’t forget spots that are easy to miss, such as your ears, neck, the tops of your feet, and the backs of your hands. Reapply at least every two hours, or sooner if you’ve been swimming or sweating.

Sunscreen is only one part of protecting your skin. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing provides even more protection. Whenever possible, try to limit your time in direct sunlight during the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. Checking the daily UV Index before spending extended time outdoors can also help you plan ahead and take the right precautions.

It’s also important to know that certain medications—including some antibiotics, acne medications, diuretics, and blood pressure medications—can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. If you’re unsure whether one of your medications increases your risk of sunburn or heat-related problems, ask your pharmacist. We’re happy to help you understand how to stay safe while taking your medications.

Making sunscreen part of your daily routine only takes a minute, but it can have lasting benefits for your skin. If you’re not sure which sunscreen is right for you or your family, stop by Yale Drug. Our pharmacists are happy to help you choose a sunscreen based on your skin type, lifestyle, and medications so you can enjoy the outdoors safely all summer long.
